“U.S. Drones Provide Critical Protection for Evacuation of Americans from Sudanese Conflict Zone”
Hundreds of Americans were escorted out of Sudan on Saturday by armed drones as they fled the country’s ongoing conflict. The unmanned aerial vehicles flew above a convoy of buses as they traveled from Khartoum to Port Sudan on the west coast. The US government is expected to release more information about the number of people evacuated once they arrive safely in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The Department of Defense deployed intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance assets to support the evacuation routes, and naval assets were moved to provide support along the coast. The evacuation was made possible by “intensive negotiations” with the support of regional and international partners. Fighting between Sudan’s two top generals, Abdel Fattah Burhan and Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, has hit civilian infrastructure, including hospitals, and several attempts at a ceasefire have failed. Americans are encouraged not to travel to Sudan.
