“Groundbreaking BVLOS Exam Set to Revolutionize Australian Drone Industry”

The drone industry is constantly evolving, which means the standards and regulations for remote pilots are also changing. Currently, remote pilots need a Remote Pilots License (RePL) for the type and size of drone they’ll be flying. But with more companies pushing boundaries and flying beyond the remote pilots’ visual line of sight (BVLOS), additional licensing requirements are needed to adhere to regulations. In 2023, the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) will introduce a new examination called the Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) OCTA examination, which will provide remote pilots with the specific licensing and ratings required to operate drones beyond visual line of sight in Australia outside controlled airspace. The exam covers a range of topics, including general BVLOS knowledge, aeronautical knowledge, meteorology, airspace, human factors, navigation systems, and communications. Remote pilots can self-study or take targeted courses before taking the 40-question multiple-choice exam with a pass mark of 70%. However, passing the exam doesn’t allow remote pilots to operate BVLOS without the company holding an approval issued by CASA for BVLOS operations in a specific area.
