If you have 20/20 vision, you might be able to make out a white smudge about three-quarters of the way down in the middle of the crystal-clear ocean off Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Experts from the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy revealed that the camera-shy predator was using “countershading” to blend in with its surroundings and hide from predators and prey. White sharks can be seen in the area as early as April, with peak season between August and October. Last August, over 30 great white sharks were spotted off the coast in just two days, leading to beach closures. While shark attacks are rare, locals sell striped shark-repelling socks to tourists wishing to distinguish themselves from seals.
